Today I meditated on this statue of Harriet Tubman to remind myself of myself, my ancestors, and our capacity. This POWERFUL BLACK WOMAN escaped slavery despite all odds then returned despite all risk then escaped again and took others with her then went back again, escaped again, took others with her again… She did this at least 13 times (that we know of). She was never caught.
If we dare call her “American” (she was a fugitive of and slave within the United States until the Civil War) this is one of an egregiously small number of “American” statues I would honor. This is what a hero looks like.
