About 50 years ago the “stonewall riots” marked what we now know as pride and leading gay liberation movement in the US. This uprising against a police raid took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969.

Later in the 70’s and 80’s LGBTQ activists of color who formed groups like Salsa Soul Sisters, GMAD and Act Up continued the work to make it possible for the celebrations we have now.

Both then and now pride marches have continued celebrating who we are and lobbying for economic and political freedom and acceptance.

This past Sunday the tradition continued with activism, fun festivities, good friends, good food, love, and PRIDE. I am blessed to be part of a community that has the guts (and the heart) to see everybody’s humanity. I truly enjoyed being amongst the rainbows.

today’s affirmation: I am part of a long legacy of LGBTQ family and activists of color who while not always seen have always been both fierce and fabulous.
